The Rev. Dr. Richard Ward

Weekend of Nov 14-15, 2009

Chalmers United Church,

Kingston, Ont.

Chalmers United Church is pleased to announce that the 2009 Speaker for the Hilliker Preaching Lectureship is the Rev. Dr. Richard Ward who teaches Preaching and Performance Studies at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Ward is a master biblical storyteller and comes to us highly recommended by last years HPL speaker, the widely acclaimed writer/preacher Barbara Brown Taylor. She has described Dr. Ward as “the funniest man I know, and while very liberal in his theology he is also very attached to the gospel.”

Richard Ward brings to the study of preaching a rich background in performance studies and practices. He is particularly interested in the arts of storytelling and oral interpretation of scripture as they inform and enrich the ministry of preaching. Dr. Ward is the author of Speaking from the Heart: Preaching with Passion and a number of contributions and articles in the area of preaching, performance theory, and communication studies. He is a frequent speaker, storyteller and workshop leader at church and college conferences in North America.

While teaching at Iliff, Dr. Ward also serves as a part time pastor in the Denver area, so he knows the parish as well as the academy. Ordained in the United Church of Christ, Dr. Ward, holds membership in the National Communication Association as well as the International Network of Biblical Storytellers.

The HPL planning committee is in the process of designing the 2009 November 14-15th weekend in a way that will make use of the particular gifts and talents which Dr. Ward brings to the challenge of communicating the Gospel in a changing and engaging world.
