Youth United Skating Evening and Utensil Dinner
On January 27th, Youth United held its first event of 2008; a skating party and ‘utensil’ dinner. Youth from Chalmers and Sydenham Street United Churches met at Market Square for an hour of outdoor skating fun. The youth and young adults enjoyed the fresh air and the opportunity to meet new people from other United churches in the area. After the skating, we headed back to Chalmers for some hot chocolate and a discussion about several of the outreach projects we may wish to support with our Youth Outreach Fund.
Youth United has been contributing to our Youth Outreach Fund over the past three years with our Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day almond bark sales, as well as with our Easter Basket silent auction and ‘Photographs of Kingston’ sale. Recently, we were able to provide an orphanage in China, in which our leader Brianne Lewis volunteered in, with 18 wrist watches for the children and a DVD player. During our outreach discussion, Brianne explained about the conditions in the orphanage, and how our Youth United contribution will make a difference in the lives of the children who live there. We also discussed the possibility of contributing to the Bay of Quinte Conference You to Youth Tanzanian AIDS Project, and to the Grandmother Connection caring for grandchildren of AIDS afflicted Africa. Thank you to all three church congregations for their generous support of our youth outreach fund.
Following our discussion, we had a very enjoyable- and rather unusual- lasagne dinner. Each person was given a different utensil to eat the meal with; the ladle, spatula, salad tongs and pie lifter were particularly memorable. All-in-all, a great time was had by everyone! We concluded the evening with a potluck dessert and good wishes. Thanks to all who participated in this event!
